Group Discussions (GD) are both fun and exciting processes where we get the chance to keep our views and listen to others too at the same time. In some of the places Group Discussions are introduced when a person is called up for a job interview or so on. Group Discussions should be integrated with the education system and the students should be indulged in the process of group discussion in the Classroom itself.
Group Discussions help the child develop new perspectives and there are many other advantages too. All of these will be discussed in the article and thus you can read about all of them.
- Group discussions are beneficial in a variety of ways. Let’s begin with its significance. GD aids in the development of confidence, i.e., it boosts your confidence to the point that you will not be afraid to speak up even if there are a lot of people around you.
- GD assists you in pushing yourself to new heights. You’re not going to stop until you’ve made your point. If someone gets in the way of your point, you simply replace them with a more important and legitimate point.
- It instils in us the courage to take action. Initiative pushes us to areas we never thought possible. Our confidence, eagerness to gain that job or seat, and managerial talents will all be visible to the person conducting the GD.
- Maintain your position. In that difficult GD, a controlled and straight sitting stance will show how confident and relaxed you are.
- In a nutshell, GD is about being yourself while keeping a close eye on every word you say. At that moment in time, your words will be more precious than you.
- The process of exchanging and discussing ideas with others to establish a shared understanding or solution is known as group discussion. It’s a useful tool for problem-solving, making decisions, and learning. Participants in a group discussion exchange their knowledge, skills, and experience to reach a common goal.
Advantages to having a Group Conversation
- Participants will have more opportunities to share ideas and learn from one another.
- The ability to come up with solutions to challenges has improved.
- Team spirit and morale have improved with the help of group discussions. In the classrooms, students can get the importance of group discussions. This will help them in society, in professional life, and also in personal life.
- Participants will have the opportunity to form bonds with one another. The students from a very tender age will develop that sense of listening to others.
- In group discussions, the participants will get to discuss many topics which will increase their thinking potential. Development of nurturing of the young mind is very important and group discussion can contribute a lot to this. Discussing various things also makes the students aware of new things by listening to others. They develop new views on certain things.
How will Group Discussions help the teacher?
The teacher will get to know a student better and he/she will know about:
- Who is an excellent listener and listens with patience to others?
- Show Confidence even if you know that you are speaking about something not known or the world has never heard. It will prove worthy.
- Who is actively contributing to the Group Discussions and can be a good candidate for various programs?
- Is the Short Tempered? (Big No if you are. Never show emotions ). Because you are going to work in a class environment with your classmates. Being short-tempered will hurt you. The important thing is being rational and prudent.
- How do you Disagree? How do you resolve conflicts? How do you Channelize the discussion towards a conclusion?
- How do you excuse yourself?
- Does he/she know what GD v/s Debate means? Always remember you are in GD not debate. Don’t start brawling at every topic that is passed to you in the classroom.
Do’s and Don’ts for a Group Discussion
Group Discussions are an important part of the Classroom and the students should know how to behave while the group discussion is going on. Thus here are the points listed below which will help you in knowing about some of the major points of Do’s and Don’ts:-
Do’s
- Choose a topic that is comfortable for all participants.
- Announce to the participants the agenda of the discussion (what are you going to discuss and in which order – brief presentation).
- Allow every participant to tell their opinion.
- Moderate the discussion – stop the people who talk too much and encourage the people who do not speak to say what they think on the topic, gently conduct the discussion by going from one point to another and then, in the end, draw conclusions
Don’ts
- Do not judge what the participants say.
- Do not give one person the time to say everything they want and cut the other people short.
- Change the agenda of the discussion depending on what someone in the group says – you may incorporate that topic too but make sure you discuss the important things you gathered to discuss.
After all this, the conclusion is that Group Discussions are important given the fact that it is conducted in a correct way for the students. So, it must be tried that the teachers also know about the group discussions and conduct them accordingly.
