Inclusive education is a new term that has been in use constantly. Inclusive education means education for all despite the differences in resources, skills, or potential in the different candidates. Thus inclusive education means providing education to all and meanwhile not letting any child get excluded from the education system. Inclusive education promotes Inclusive development in society and helps a country in meeting its different targets too. Inclusive education includes students regardless of their caste, race, gender, etc, and put education as the only aim.
The idea and the definition of Inclusive education are really interesting, but achieving it has been a difficult task. The issues that inclusive development faces are both structural and functional. However, constant practices are going on to build a better India by promoting inclusive education in every way.
Benefits of Inclusive Education
The benefits of Inclusive education are huge and some of them are as follows:-
- All efforts in one class:- The teacher will have one huge benefit of inclusive education and the benefit is that the teacher can put all efforts into one single class. Making different strategies for different classes may give the teacher a sense of doing a lot of work, but in the case of inclusive education, the teacher can make his/her working hours more inclusive by investing energy for a single class. This will also impact the quality of the education and will make it more productive.
- Children will learn from each other:- Each of the students will get to learn from their difficulties and cultural aspects. The differences among them will give the teacher a good opportunity for embedding the feeling of respect in each of the children for each other’s differences. Moreover, the teacher won’t have to teach each of the students about the different groups of people.
- New experience for the teachers:-Inclusive education will provide the teachers an opportunity to have a new experience for them. If inclusive education is a happy journey, on one hand, it is a challenging one on the other hand. These challenges will provide the teachers with a new opportunity to learn. The teachers can contribute a lot to inclusive education by learning new things daily from the differences of the students. The teacher also needs to research new things. For eg:- A blind student will need special assistance and thus the need to assist him/her by learning new things. This will contribute to the self-development of the teacher also.
How to Create Inclusive Education or Inclusive Classrooms?
There are many ways and strategies through which Inclusive education can be implemented in the schools.
We will be discussing about some of them:-
- Universal Learning Design:- Inclusive education can be implemented when the teacher brings in various ways of learning. The various ways of education are through audio, graphics, etc. The traditional classroom can benefit only those students who are privileged enough to attend the school. If inclusive education needs strata of students from that village where there are no schools, then the teachers must think of including online classrooms on the alternate lines of the offline ones. The disabled students need special guidance and a different approach. The classroom must have all the facilities so that the disabled students get equal access to every information provided in the classroom.
- Making teachers more active:- As Rome was not built in a day, inclusive education can’t be achieved in a day or two. For achieving inclusive education, the teachers need to collaborate on different lines. Every teacher who is in charge of a certain class in a school needs to collaborate for getting specific results. The teachers can promote the idea to others and can start inclusive education in their school at least. Independent working won’t be much helpful in the field of inclusive education. When teachers are present in large numbers, the large number of differences won’t seem big.
- Awareness:-Inclusive education is designed for the students who are non-privileged. Many social norms are ongoing in many societies and this hampers the growth of the student. Thus, making that particular society aware is the most important step. The teachers can take help from social media to spread awareness. There are societies where girls’ education is still taboo. The teachers can take the help of fieldwork and different projects to spread awareness. For disabled children, the teachers need to ensure their families that their children are safe in school and their education is for their betterment.
Inclusive education helps the students in making their social and communication skills better. The students feel included and this helps in making behavioral changes the students. They impart the same in their home and thus by including a particular student, the education system can work towards the inclusive development of many. There are many educational platforms like ‘Gibbon’ which provide material and a great platform for the teachers to realize their aim of providing inclusive education.
