Conducting Online classes might sound easy, but is it actually that simple? If you have already conducted online classes during the pandemic then you might realize how different and challenging it is to get students engaged with you in your virtual classes. In fact teaching online requires completely different skill sets that needs to be practiced by the teachers.

Online classes are the thing of this decade. Introduced with the new decade that started with COVID-19 pandemic. There are a plethora of reasons which have led people to prefer online classes over usual lectures. Online classes are cost-friendly, they are easy to conduct and manage and can be taken from the comfort zone of your home.

Online classes Have countless benefits, still some teachers face difficulty engaging students in their live lectures as there are lesser means of teacher-student interaction. So to end this boredom and to make your class more riveting, we have listed some tips which will help you make your online classes interesting.

1. Schedule Regular Classes

Any thing which is done on a regular basis, develops an interest or a habit of doing that thing again. Similarly, online classes when conducted on a regular basis will undoubtedly create a path of interest among the students. Regular online classes will not only make your students learn quickly but it will also enhance your teaching skills through which you can develop a better command over students. Having a flow like this will always help and promote your classes and will also keep the students hooked. In this way students’ knowledge can also be enhanced by a huge margin in a very quick time.

2. Have Debates, Quizzes or Discussions

Usually students find subjects like history, civics boring as there is just one way conversation in it and no or least participation of students takes place. Similarly if you are into just reciting the topics before the class then students will lose interest in your subject.

The best remedy to overcome this issue are as follows:

  • Debates will help students understand things better, it will make them notice points that they would not have understood initially and the revision of that topic will also be done then and there.
  • Quizzes simply test the knowledge of students and develop a feeling of competition among them. The increasing competition will make the students want to do better in the quizzes and this will automatically enhance the quality of the class and the interest among students.
  • Discussions done over topics will lead to interest development among students. It will make them curious about various things and this will make the whole class interactive.

3. Giving Examples and Creating Situations

This is probably the most used technique to help students understand some topics. I am going to explain this by using the same technique so that at the end of this paragraph everything gets clear at your end.

  • When teachers have to explain addition they always give the reference of fingers, fruits, or anything that is lying in front of the student. This helps the student to visualize what the teacher is trying to teach and then build an understanding of that concept from it. This is giving examples to help students understand more.
  • Another way is giving situations, like if the teacher wants an answer from the student and suppose the problem is 2+2, the teacher would rather ask if the student has two pencils and she gives them two more how many pencils the student has now. This is creating a situation in which the student is able to visualize and relate to the problem.

This is how giving examples and creating situations helps make the class more interesting.

4. Making students explain something

The nature of students is competitive and like pointing out faults and mistakes done by their friends. So if you make students explain some topic to their friends or class, chances are that his fellow classmates will listen more carefully. So in such a scenario the students automatically get involved and begin their interaction in the class and this will create a positive learning atmosphere in your class.

5. Using various tools to teach

The utmost benefit of conducting online classes is unlimited resources for tools which will help in teaching. Teachers can use video clips from any source like YouTube to show students something related to the topic, they can also use images instead of drawing them. Teachers can also use presentations to give lectures which will be very helpful for them.

6. Engaging with Doubt Sessions

One of the most important features of teaching in online or offline class is clarifying the doubts of the students. At the end of every class, teachers must start an online doubt clarifying session which will help students clarify their doubts then and there about the topic taught by the teacher during the session.

7. Ask students for reviews

The best way to keep up the quality of your lectures is by asking those who have benefited from it, i.e., your students. Asking students did they understand what was taught in lecture or not, if not then where was the problem. It is the students feedback which will do wonders in making your class’ quality top notch. Even if your lecture was not that good you can ask students even then and work with how they want to be taught. This will help you a lot in terms of keeping the quality of your class at a constant good level.

8. Keep yourself calm

This is a necessary habit which every teacher must possess. There are many instances when teachers tend to lose their calm and scream and scold students. This should never happen because as a teacher you represent a role model for students and they have to learn from you and in this way they will adopt aggression from you which will soon result in chaos in the class and will make things really hard to control.

Also, sometimes when a teacher loses their calm it has a bad impact on the student. The student loses interest in the teacher and so does all their friends as well. This means losing a chunk of students from your class. So, it’s advisable  that as a teacher you must always handle every situation with ease and comfort.

9. Frequent Intervals

Students tend to lose interest in anything which is too lengthy and same goes for the class sessions. If your session continues for more then the usual time then it is advisable to take short breaks before further continuing with the topics. These kinds of short refreshing breaks help students to retain their focus in the class.
