Micro Teaching Plan is basically a short plan prepared by a teacher to give a quick class or to strategise quickly before giving a sudden class. Micro Teaching Plans are made by teachers when teachers are supposed to give a lecture as part of a trial for a new job or sometimes as part of a replacement for any other teacher.
When giving a demo of teaching, having a ready-made micro teaching plan is a big bonus because in this way you are always prepared to give a lecture and being ready to give a lecture for the demo will automatically make the lecture more engaging and understandable. The key objective of every class a teacher gives is to make the students understand the topics and concepts taught in the class and this can be achieved by having pre-planned micro-teaching lessons.
First we will discuss the five fundamentals of Micro Teaching Lesson Plans:
Planning
The trainer gives a few guidelines for teachers according to which the teachers have to plan their whole lecture. Because this is a demo class there will be a lesser number of students making the job of teacher much easier and therefore the teachers can plan their class accordingly. The planning will primarily consist of two elements, lessons and activities which the teacher will select in this initial phase of making the micro-teaching cycle.
Teaching
After the formation of the plan, the teachers start to deliver the topic they have prepared and the activities they planned. In this scenario, the teacher is being observed by the trainer/supervisor, therefore, the teacher must give a top notch performance and engage as many students as possible.
Observation Made by the Supervisor
So during the teacher’s class the supervisor sees how well the teacher is doing and gives them suggestions and writes down the feedback of the classes conducted by the teacher. One small example of observation by a supervisor is that supervisors want the teachers to always have an eye on the students so when the teacher is writing on the board the teacher must write while standing sideways instead of turning their whole back towards students.
Re-Planning & Re-Teaching
We can continue with the above example to explain this point. So, when the supervisor tells the teacher to write while standing sideways the teacher starts doing that which means the teacher is now following a different plan than the previous one so in this way the teacher re-plans the class conduction and teaches in the way they are told to do so.
Re-Observation Made by the Supervisor
It is the supervisors duty to again observe the teacher and in most cases if the teacher does something wrong then they lose their opportunity and if everything goes well they are hired for the job and can conduct full time classes. So, doing everything correctly the second time is very important.
There are three phases in micro-teaching. They are mentioned below:
Acquiring Knowledge
Accumulating information is the first step while preparing for a micro-teaching session. The under-training teachers can get information from various books of the subject they are about to teach or watch related instructional videos. Also, one very necessary quality that the trainee must have is the understanding of skills required to do the task. This feature of micro-teaching is the first and one of the most important features.
Learning the necessary skills
Skill development is another crucial feature of Micro-Teaching. There are certain skill sets which are required from the teacher in order to deliver an excellent session of micro-teaching. So learning such skills is also very important. This feature requires teachers to learn how to design and deliver lectures and also getting a hold over the skills using the model which is taught in the initial stage. There are two important elements in micro teaching, setting and communication.
Final Phase
This phase is the transitional phase in which the teacher goes to an actual class in order to give the lecture. This is where all the pre-class plannings of teachers are tested. In this phase, both the teacher and student can learn a lot and will go on to improve individually.
Now let’s cover the basic features of micro teaching plans. Below are five of them:
Planning the lecture
Teachers are supposed to prepare a complete strategy before they start their lecture. In the planning for this strategy, teachers must create phases as mentioned above and plan accordingly. They must have some target for students and that target must be realistic. This target is like how many students must understand what the trainee is teaching and how well they will understand it. They must create a time limit for it as well. These sessions of micro-teaching last for 15-30 minutes.
Get an idea about the students
Teachers are told beforehand whether the students they are about to teach are either good, bad or average. But it is a teacher’s job to examine their level of understanding because this might be a test for you as a teacher, whether you can see the actual potential of the students or not. In case, if the potential of students is not par with the teacher’s previous understanding then the teacher should immediately switch to teach as per the level of students.
Setting Objectives
It is very important for a teacher to set objectives in order to give themselves some milestones which they would want to achieve. If the teacher establishes the goals during the initial phase of the class then it becomes comparatively easier for the students to learn because then they know where they are headed and what they are supposed to learn.
Delivering the lecture
This is the final feature of micro-teaching, delivering the lecture with keeping all the key things in mind is very important. This is where everything you planned, worked and established comes to play. So, with utmost concentration and confidence you must deliver the lecture.
